At a local live poker game I used to regularly attend, it was popular among many of the players, loose as they were, to draw at a gutshot straight, often regardless of the price. Though when it does hit, it makes a splashI’ve seen many hands where a big flop hand got decimated by these players hitting their 4 outer on the rivermore often you see these players bust night after night after night.

When asked by the poker online player who has just been sucked out, “Why chase a gutshot?” the answer often is something like this: “I only needed one more card to come out there.” Obviously this is a pretty ridiculous way to look at it, from a math standpoint. While betting out or trying to steal with that small draw can be profitable by the extra odds you get that your opponent might fold, cold calling these players down in the hopes of hitting ‘one card’ is chasing slim odds, throwing good money after bad for a small chance at a pot that you will win less than 20% of the time.

When you take this kind of hit it’s easy to get angry, but remembering that these kinds of folks, willing to put their money in over and over again with small chances to win, are the ones you want to be playing poker online with, as in the long run you will end up with all of their money.
