These days it is essential for a business to invest in network hardware if only to market their products or services on the internet. This outlay is attributable not merely to the costs associated by purchasing the equipment, but also because these units must have regular updates, upkeep, and repairs, which often has to be performed by some IT professional services. Then there’s the unwelcome profit loss caused by the down time and hassle. Purchasing used computer hardware and other items helps business organizations to reduce the initial outlay, in particular when a business is in its infancy and professionals setting up a business alone due to the big investments they’ve already made. It is not difficult to see why the market for quality second hand servers and information storage is flourishing. They can purchase these items at a small fraction of the price and they usually operate just as well if not better than brand new computer hardware. An additional good point of purchasing second-hand computer hardware is availability. If you can do without the hassles associated with the very latest technologies, sourcing a specific brand or model can look like a huge task. When using suppliers who actually focus on second hand servers and used data storage though, it is really a piece of cake. Usually you will even find your preferred manufacturer or model.

It is no secret that the latest hardware is almost always problematic, and generally really isn’t great value for money. As a result early adopters who buy these items just after they enter the market are often forced to upgrade or patch the new hardware. Once in a while, the new hardware is so much trouble that people have to take a loss on it and simply replace it with something else after an ineffectual attempt at implementation.

This isn’t a problem with refurbished servers and other equipment because they have already been used for some time. You will not have to spend time ironing out the factory problems often found in brand new networking equipment. As well, because each and every unit is carefully checked prior to being shipped, there’s no need to worry about dependability.

The key to sourcing the most from refurbished equipment is finding quality suppliers. Take your time and find a supplier that in reality has the experience to meet your needs. This makes sure the items you purchase are good quality. And in case something goes wrong, make sure your purchases are backed up by a guarantee.

You can see that in comparison with taking a risk on high-priced the latest equipment, sourcing refurbished IT equipment makes a lot of sense. If you work out how much money and time you can save, you’ll wonder why you didn’t try second-hand computer hardware before.

The Obama Administration has just launched an ‘app store’ that is expected to get the federal government riding onto the era of cloud computing.
With this change, government employees are going to start using Gmail, WordPress, YouTube and related services that store data on private internet servers as opposed to paying for the servers using public funds.

The process of moving to cloud computing is going to be slow but the transition will gradually pick up its pace, says US chief information officer Vivek Kundra in a blog post. He also wrote that the current policies are still way behind the new trends and this has caused unnecessary restrictions on the efficient use of the latest technologies.

The app store is going to allow federal employees to conduct official business for the government and is not open to the public.
Google has also announced on Tuesday that it has created a government cloud where Google computer servers are going to be used for storing public data come 2010. According to the technology giant’s blog post, the dedicated space is going to be allotted for the needs of the federal, state and local government.

Both projects, the app store and the government cloud, will allow the government to save money while at the same time giving its employees access to various tools that are commonly used by the private sector. The measures coincide with the current administration’s efforts to keep the government updated with the latest technologies.
Kundra added that the cost savings brought by the change are going to be significant. The federal government currently spends about $75 billion each year on information technology including managed hosting.

If you are planning to purchase a notebook computer, then there are seven key questions that you will need to ask yourself. Doing this will enable you to arrive at the kind of quality notebook that best suits your purposes and current budget.

1 - How portable, how powerful?

The issue of size and weight will determine how easily you will be able to carry around your notebook computer. After all, one of the reasons why you may have decided to purchase a notebook computer in the first place, is most probably based on the issue of portability. You will need to strike a balance based on your needs and requirements between ultra-portables and desktop replacements. The former offer very small-sized and light weight computers but will often sacrifice a number of items in achieving this. For instance they will tend to get rid of optical drives, among other items that may be important to you. With desktop replacements they will usually tend to be heavy and bulky making them a little difficult to carry around.

2 - What should be the processor speed and type?

The processor speed will contribute heavily to how fast you will be able to accomplish tasks on your notebook computer. If your notebook is meant to be mainly a web browser, with word processing and maybe a DVD player, then any processor that has a speed of 1 GHz or more should work. However if you have in mind a desktop replacement then you will need a high-end processor of 1.6 GHz or higher.

Secondly the type of processor is an important consideration too. Processors based on Centrino technology consume less power and yield improved battery lifetime.

3 - What Screen size, what resolution?

It is important to check the resolution of the screen on the notebook you are purchasing. Everybody would like a larger screen but some large screens have such a high resolution that it is counterproductive and makes the reading of standard fonts difficult. You will also have to remember that the larger the screen the heavier and more difficult to carry your laptop computer will be.

4 - Should the notebook have a convincing optical drive?

In laptops nowadays, the choice of optical drives is important. Laptops have these days been turned into portable DVD players with the DVD-ROM or CD-RW/DVD combo drive. They can even be plugged into a home theater system. The problem is that many ultra-portable laptops quite often lack an internal optical drive to save on space.

5 - Do you require redundant ways to access the Internet?

Ability to connect to the Internet is a key feature. You should be careful to look for systems that include a built-in 56 Kbps modem and Fast Ethernet. If you wish, you can go further and look for a computer with an integrated 802.11 b/g wireless adapter because locations with hotspots for connectivity are rapidly and constantly growing.

6 - How long would you be away from the mains on average?

A portable computer with less than two hours of computing time on a single charge is a big waste. You should look to get a system with at least 3-4 hours of battery life.

7 - What Warranty options should you be looking at?

Because laptops are moved around a lot, they are much more likely to break down. Many people make this mistake with laptops because we hardly follow up on the warranty for PCs. Remember that laptops are different because they take much more abuse on the go. So you should ensure that you get at least a one year warranty from the manufacturer.
